Alcoholic Intervention
It is common for alcoholics to dismiss the
fact that they are becoming dependent on alcohol to sustain their
life’s functions. They try to eradicate the fact that most of their
loved ones and friends are being affected negatively with the
situation they are into. More disheartening is the attitude that is
common among alcoholics when confronted: reluctance to accept the
fact. However if you are as concerned as what you are saying and
want to really help then it is time to do an alcoholic
intervention.
Alcoholic intervention is done to help an
alcoholic recover and hopefully never succumb to alcohol addiction
again. However this is not an easy task since most patients have
negative thoughts on alcohol treatments.
Denial to the
real extent of their situation, lack of trust with therapies and
social problems such as discrimination are heavy reasons why most
alcoholics view treatments in a negative light.
Intervention strategies then should be
variable and subjective for the consequences if not done
accordingly can backfire and instead of helping the victim quit,
you become supportive of his vice. On a brighter side, if
intervention is done properly and with loving support of family
members and friends, satisfying results could be
achieved.
Some things however can be taken to achieve
successful when doing alcoholic intervention. These include the
following:
●
State the obvious – do not try to be over protective of your loved
ones especially if alcoholism has been associated with violence.
Let them see the extent of the consequences of their action even if
it will hurt them.
●
Perfect the timing – do intervention when both parties are
resigned. Intervention will not work effectively when one of the
other parties are not calm. Often intervention talks works after a
major dispute or related alcoholism accident.
●
Magnify the effect – apart from stating the obvious, magnify the
effects of alcoholism by stating facts or examples of things that
happen recently. This helps to prove that his/her dependence on
alcohol will not get that person on better grounds.
●
Inspect the range – research and examine all possible treatment and
rehab centers that are within close proximity in your area. Once
you finally convince someone to seek help then it is easier to
place and monitor the progress of the patient’s
treatment.
