Alcoholism is a disease but many believe that it is not.  This is an alcoholism fact that people should be aware of in case you fear that someone you know may be an alcoholic.  It is also good all around knowledge that a concerned citizen should be aware about.  You may wonder why you should know this.  Well, one out of every 13 adults is an alcoholic.  

Therefore, you may not think you know someone who indulges in alcohol but you probably do, you are just unaware of it.   It is reported that more than fifty percent of Americans have at least one close relative that is an alcoholic.

Another alcoholism fact is that the continued alcoholic indulgence can lead to fatal diseases such as cancer.  Alcoholics have an increased chance of cancers in the esophagus, voice box, the throat and in particular the liver. 

Alcoholics are also prone to problems in the immune systems, brain damage and liver cirrhosis.  Alcohol may not only be dangerous to you, but pregnant women can also greatly damage a fetus causing it to have tremendous problems such as Down syndrome and even death. 

Now that you know the risks of alcoholism, it is a good idea to know some of the alcoholism facts regarding alcoholic’s behaviors and signs.  Alcoholics cannot refuse the chance to pass up a drink.  They also crave drinking and do not view themselves as having any limitations on their drinking capacity. 

One of the reasons that make alcoholism so dangerous is that alcoholics do not believe that they have a problem and that the amount of alcohol that they consume is the same amount that they can handle. 

Even the physical appearance of an alcoholic is a skew after refraining from alcohol after a few hours.  They have created such dependencies that they begin to shake, sweat, and become withdrawn.

Therefore, alcoholism is not just something that one can overcome.  This alcoholism fact is crucial to know especially when billions of tax dollars that you pay are being spent on alcohol related problems.  It is important for you, family and friends to know about these facts because they affect everyone either directly or indirectly.

If you know someone who you may believe has a heavy drinking problem, you should try to get him or her help.  Helping people one by one can be just enough to save one life from the hands of a drunk driver.
